Unsuspecting drivers were met with a roadblock at the Towong Bridge crossing early this morning.
Motorists in the Upper Murray who have to travel between NSW and Victoria need to be aware that the Towong and Tintaldra bridge crossings were closed to traffic when the border was closed last night. It was expected that crossings at Towong, Tintaldra, Bringenbrong and Jingellic would act as checkpoints and be manned by NSW police but only the latter two are operational. Towong and Tintaldra bridges are both closed, causing excessive delays for drivers..
Only permit holders, emergency services workers, freight drivers and returning travellers will be able to cross into NSW from Victoria.
The crossing closures were not widely publicised and information is not readily available on the Transport NSW website. It is understood that authorities on the Victorian side of the border, including police and emergency services, were not advised of the closures either.
